The 23 areas run from the city itself across the bay to Oakland and Berkeley, and north over the Golden Gate into the Marin hills. The listed places include Brisbane, Daly City, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame, Pacifica, Sausalito, Mill Valley, Belvedere and Tiburon, Corte Madera, Larkspur, Kentfield, Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, Albany, Emeryville, Piedmont, El Cerrito, Richmond and San Pablo. Start with the downtown San Francisco area if the work is in the city proper.
The hills set access more than distance does. Steep narrow streets, stair accesses, shared driveways and rear yards reached only on foot are the normal case in the hill neighborhoods of San Francisco, across the Marin hills, and in the Oakland and Berkeley hills. A unit that cannot be carried to the work usually ends up at the curb, and that brings the street space permit into the job.
Coastal sites have their own conditions. Pacific fog and wind come off the ocean, heaviest in summer mornings on the west side of the city and along the coast at Pacifica and Ocean Beach, and wind matters for a staked unit on open ground. Rain falls mostly in the winter months, and bare ground turns to mud on a job site, so placement is planned for the season as well as for the spot.
Permits follow the jurisdiction. Inside San Francisco, street placements go through Public Works, closed streets for events go through ISCOTT, and park events go through Recreation and Park. Port property needs a Port permit. Outside the city, the city or county that governs the site sets the rule, and the San Francisco rules on this site do not carry over. The street permit guide covers the city side.
