General information only
The guides, articles and answers on this Site are general information for homeowners and businesses in San Francisco County. They are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a qualified technician.
Independent service partners
The work in San Francisco is done by an independent local provider, not by San Francisco Porta Potty Rental. San Francisco Porta Potty Rental takes the call and passes it to that provider, which delivers, services and removes the units. Portable sanitation is not a licensed consumer trade in California, so this page does not claim a license for the provider. The provider's registration number is available by phone to anyone who asks at (888) 351-0294.
That number is not printed on this site. It is the provider's private business information, and PRIVACY is the reason it stays off public pages. For a caller in San Francisco, that means asking on the phone before booking, especially for a hill address, stair access or a unit that will sit in the street, because the provider's answer on access and permits shapes the quote.

Prices are estimates
Price ranges are typical estimates for our service area in 2026. They are not quotes or offers. Your price is confirmed in person before any work starts.
Safety and sanitation
A portable restroom holds human waste and a deodorising chemical, and both should be treated as hazardous. Do not open, drain, tip or move a unit yourself, and do not put anything into it but what it is there for — rubbish, solvents, paint and hot ashes all cause problems that the next person to service it has to deal with. Keep children from playing in or around units, do not smoke inside one, and wash or sanitise your hands afterwards; that is what the hand-wash station beside the unit is for.
Placement is a safety matter too. A unit must stand on firm, level ground, clear of vehicle routes, doorways, fire exits, hydrants and overhead lines, and it must not block a footway or an accessible route. On soft ground, slopes, roof decks or in exposed wind it has to be anchored or ballasted, because an empty unit is light enough to go over. Tell us about slopes, soft ground, overhead cables, weight limits and gate widths before delivery rather than after.
In hot weather units need servicing more often; in freezing weather they need a winter additive and clear access for the service vehicle. If a unit is damaged, has been tipped over, or is overflowing, do not use it and do not try to right it — call us and we will deal with it.
Licensing, permits and waste disposal
Portable sanitation is not a licensed trade the way plumbing or electrical work is, and California issues no portable-restroom contractor licence. We do not claim one, and nothing on this Site should be read as a claim to hold a licence, certification or approval we do not have.
What is regulated is the waste and where it ends up. Sanitary waste taken out of a unit may only be discharged at a facility permitted to receive it — a wastewater treatment works or a permitted septage disposal site — and in most states the vehicles and operators that haul it are registered or permitted by the state environmental or public-health agency and have to keep records of what was collected and where it was discharged. The exact requirement differs by state, county and city; the one that applies to your job is the one in force where the unit stands. Ask us how your waste is handled and where it goes.
Where units are needed is set by other rules again. On construction sites, OSHA's sanitation standard (29 CFR 1926.51) sets how many toilets are required for the number of workers and requires them to be kept clean and serviced. Events open to the public come under the Americans with Disabilities Act, which is why wheelchair-accessible units are not an optional extra. A temporary event usually needs sign-off from the local health department, and a unit standing on a pavement, verge or street normally needs the landowner's permission and sometimes a right-of-way permit. We will tell you what we know about the requirements in your area, but confirming them for your site or event is the organiser's or the site manager's responsibility, and nothing here is legal or regulatory advice.
